In A Ruin Called Hope, you guide three young people as they inspect an old house they've just purchased from the bank. Inside, bad blood will boil over, and the three youths will need to find a way out.

My entry for the 14th RPG Maker Horror Game Jam. It was my first time using RPG Maker, so it's a bit cursed. Fitting for a haunted house.

Entered the room with the fireplace on the first floor and got stuck, doors wouldn't work. :/

cool game :) it's the least janky + most similar to the classic rpg maker games i'm used to out of the submissions i've played/was able to play

some comments:

- not major but i can walk through/under the car at the start so that's a little weird, other objects too like the trash cans to the right in the first room, a desk with a computer in another room etc.

- as another commenter pointed out the map is huge so i found myself entering random rooms and going up and down stairs without knowing where i was going - i only progressed by entering the right room by chance tbh

- if you have time after the jam it would be cool to have the characters make some comments when interacting with more objects in the game/a little more lore to it!

- TypeError: null is not an object (evaluating 'this.texture.baseTexture = this._bitmap.baseTexture') error in the browser version? wasn't able to complete the game in the end unfortunately but i liked the part of the game i could play!

Funny about the car. I'd marked that to fix before release but never got to it. I only ever got to make one pass at other collision, so it's really spotty.

the car at the start is an event instead of a tileset because I had an ending where Norm leaves Nat and Val behind. But I never got around to making the alternate endings. (Or Norm's whole basement route.)

Thanks for the compliments and the notes. I do plan to clean this up for a redux some day.

looking forward to it! <3

I dont understand if the "error" is the ending or just a bug lmao

Is it a missing asset error? Were you in browser or the windows release?

For the browser version, I needed to disable my ad blocker or else all the music files showed up as missing assets.

it's the browser version, that's probably why. Still, the game's great, i'll def try to replay it in the windows version. Maybe the map's a bit too vast and a bit confusing, tho. Got lost a couple of times :)

Also, are there any multiple endings?

Sort of?

The ending splits and then merges based on a choice right at the very end. So the final-final scene is always the same. There are 4 other endings in the script, but I had to take a week off in the middle of the jam, so only the "perfect" ending is actually implemented. (Nikki's presence in the epilogue was going to require finding certain pieces of information when exploring the house.)

I'm hoping - if I still like the story in a year - to put together a "Redux" version which has the other endings, points to investigate inside the house, and the ability to play as Norm as he has his GOOD TIMES in the basement.

(Unlike the other characters, the entity does not pose as one of the other players when messaging Norm, but rather it appears as his mother. Also, spoilers, I guess. Some text messages do not come from their apparent sender.)
